      The last digit of the year was originally written as an 8 but was written over by what appeared to be a 7. The following obituary from an unknown source was preserved by Mrs. J. L. (Vivian Hastings) Culpepper: Funeral Services Held for M. J. Culpepper Matthew J. Culpepper was born October 11, 1877 near Sweet Home Lavaca County, Texas. He passed away March 19, 1959 at his home in Stockdale, Texas, having made his home in Wilson County since 1903. He is survived by his wife, of Stockdale, three sons, Lee of Stockdale; Vernon of San Antonio; Lloyd of Karnes City; three daughters: Mrs. Roy Meek of Houston; Mrs. Willard Luker of Cuero; and Mrs. Malcom Welch of Pharr, Texas. Also surviving are nineteen grandchildren and ten great- grandchildren, two brothers: Everett Culpepper of Beeville and Jake Culpepper of Stockdale and Seguin; and a sister, Mrs. Ted Grant of San Antonio, besides numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and as many friends as his acquaintances were. He attended the Old Primitive Baptist Churches all his life; that was his belief, his main comfort and joy--to mingle with them, worship with them and join in singing those old songs he loved so well. The Lord giveth and the Lord calleth His own home to their eternal rest.
