(Vivian Hastings) Culpepper wrote 27 Jun 1978 that Lloyd was going to retire from United Gas Pipeline Co. 1 Jul 1978. In a 17 Jan 1979 letter Vivian added: My husband & I attended the "Awards" dinner of United Gas Pipeline Co in Houston, for the 25-30-35 & 40 year employees. Even tho he took an early retirement in July he was included and he and the other 40 yr men received nice perpetual motion clocks - No electricity, No Wind, No battery - just needs perfect balance - 7 or 8 in. square. Quite a clock - now that he does not have to live by the clock. Mrs. James L. (Vivian Hastings) Culpepper wrote 9 Mar 1991 that her husband had died of respiratory failure. The following obituary notices are from an unknown source: James Culpepper James Lloyd Culpepper, 75, a resident of Refugio for 25 years, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 5,1991 following an extended illness. Funeral services were held in Refugio at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 1991 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert R. Ross, Jr. officiating. Graveside services were held at 3:30 p.m. in the Stockdale City Cemetery under the direction of Myer Funeral Home of Stockdale. Mr. Culpepper was born June 20, 1915 in Wilson County, to Matthew John and Lela Hawk Culpepper. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Vivian Hastings; daughters: Mrs. Carolyn Barry and Mrs. Darlene Toon both of San Antonio and Mrs. Sue Junker of Spring, TX . Four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; also a brother Ira Lee Culpepper of Pleasanton. Nebraska; three sisters: Mrs. Ermine Meek of Houston, Mrs. Nina Ramsey of Cuero, TX and Mrs. Joy Welch of Mission, TX; also many relatives and friends. Soloist Mrs. Thomas Watson. Organist Mrs. Suzi Ragle both of Refugio. Pallbearers were Raymond Anderson, Emilio Perez, Berrel O. Borden, Vic Walzel, Mauro Vela and Norman Gray. [Mrs. J. L. (Vivian Hastings) Culpepper noted that these were her husband's U. G. P. Co. co-workers.] He was a member of V. F. W. post #6290 in Refugio. Mr. Culpepper joined the United States Navy at age 17, served four years on the U.S.S. Arizona. Then was employed by United Gas Pipeline Co. Gasoline Plant division; for more than 50 years, retiring at age 62. Mr. Culpepper took leave of absence and immediately returned to the U.S. Navy services after the U.S.S. Arizona was sunk at Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941 and served with the U.S.N. Seabees until the end of WWII. He received an Honorable Discharge. He then returned to United Gas Pipeline Company. He worked at Bruni, San Antonio Buda [San Antonio, Bula?], Carthage, Freer, La Tex, Karnes City, Pettus, Refugio, Texas, Athens and Rodessa, Louisiana. JAMES CULPEPPER REFUGIO--James Lloyd Culpepper, 75, a longtime resident of Refugio, died Tuesday evening. Feb. 5, 1991, in a Refugio hospital following an extended illness.
