| Biography* | Thomas was secretary and treasurer, and later vice-president, of Randall Brothers, a lumber and coal business in Atlanta. The following is from p. 612 of The Story of Georgia: THOMAS CARL BURFORD -- In the business circles of Atlanta, Thomas Carl Burford takes a place among its most progressive and public-spirited figures, a man who has not only made good in his own executive position, but has contributed to the advance of the community and the happiness of its people. He is a native Georgian, born near Flowery Branch, Hall County, October 23, 1876, son of Drew and Margarite (Shirley) Burford.... Thomas Carl Burford farmed in Elbert County until 1904, when he came to Atlanta to enter the employ of Randall Brothers, lumber and coal dealers, as bookkeeper and cashier. When this firm was incorporated in 1918 W. L. Randall was made president; P. H. Randall, vice-president, and Mr. Burford, secretary and treasurer. Since the death of W. L. Randall, in 1935, Mr. Burford has been vice-president of the concern. For a great many years he has been the practical head of the business, its driving and directing force. Mr. Burford is a Democrat and has served as a member of the County Board of Education. Fraternally, he is affiliated with Greenfield Lodge, No. 400, Free and Accepted Masons, is a member of all the bodies of the York Rite, a thirty-third degree Mason, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and a member of Yaarab Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Mr. Burford is a member of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the Druid Hills Country Club. Long a communicant of the Methodist Church, for seventeen years he has served as steward of the Druid Hills Methodist Church. On December 21, 1905, Thomas Carl Burford married Florence Culpepper, of Meriwether County, Georgia, and they are the parents of three children.... Surviving are his wife; daughters, Miss Katherine Burford, Decatur; Mr[s]. J. Wallace Culpepper, Mrs. A. Morris Atkinson, both of Atlanta; sisters, Mrs. J. V. Tate, Mrs. Neva Fortson, both of Calhoun Falls, S. C; Mrs. Joel DuBose, Cumming, Ga; brother, Mr. W. S. Burford, Calhoun Falls, and seven grandchildren. H. M. Patterson & Son. |
