| Death* | 31 Jan 2003 | He died at Griffin, Spalding Co., Georgia, on 31 Jan 2003. Mr. Elisha Herben Turner, 93, died Jan. 31, 2003, at the Christian Ministries Hospice. Mr. Turner was married to Orville Culpepper Turner, who died Feb. 14, 1996. The son of Edward Kimbrough Turner and Mrs. Frances Lee Turner, he was born in Oxford on April 7, 1909. Mr. Turner's family moved to Atlanta when Emory University moved to its Atlanta campus. There he attended Boys High School and later graduated from Emory University, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and earned his degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Turner continued his studies doing graduate work at Ohio State University and Georgia Teachers College. After teaching high school for several years in Portal, Greenville and Griffin, Mr. Turner served as superintendent of Wynne Precision Company producing radio crystals for the U.S. Signal Corps during World War II. After the war, Mr. Turner opened a woodworking business that continues manufacturing wooden belt cores today. Mr. Turner was a charter member of the Glenn Memorial Methodist Church on the Emory University campus and a long time, active member of the First United Methodist Church in Griffin, where he also was a member of the Alpha Arthur Maddox Sunday School class. Mr. Turner was the oldest member of the Griffin Rotary Club, which he joined in 1944. He was an avid sportsman who proudly introduced many young people to the outdoor world he loved. Surviving are his children; Orville Turner Burson and her husband, Ivey Burson of Griffin and E. Herben Turner Jr. and his wife, Danna Turner of Albany; five grandchildren, Turner Burson of Griffin, Park Burson of Charleston, Jud Turner and his wife, Courtney Turner, of Birmingham, Sarah Burson of Charleston and Nathan Turner Of Albany. Funeral services for Mr. Turner will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church. Friends may visit the family one hour prior to service in the Welcome Center behind the church sanctuary. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any fund at the First United Methodist Church.. |
