| Biography* | Charles Capers Culpepper was the son of Francis Marion and Elizabeth Emory B. (Haralson) Culpepper. Mrs. John (Grace Culpepper) Fowke wrote:3 Papa's middle name was Capers.... He was named after a Methodist Bishop. Capos Conley "Chip" Culpepper, II, a great-great grandson of William Henry and Sarah (Leslie) Culpepper, wrote:4 The good Bishop Capers, according ot the Methodist "Book of Discipline" was William Capers who was elected Bishop in 1846. His length of serivce is not recorded.... Charles was born on the eve of the Civil War. His parents were noted in the 1860 census in Almond P. O. District of Randolph Co., AL and this is where he is presumed to have been born. Charles was only eighteen months old when his father died in the War. Based on letters in Francis Marion Culpepper's Civil War file, his mother was living in Daviston, Tallapoosa Co., AL by 1863. And by the 1870 census, a nine year old "Charley" Culpepper was noted with his mother in the 1870 Chambers Co., AL census. A year later, his mother died. Mrs. John (Grace Culpepper) Fowke wrote:5 He told us his mother died when he was eleven years old and he was reared by his Uncle Kinchen "Kenny" Haralson, his mother's brother, and his wife, Aunt Molly. Mrs. Fowke continued:3 My father... was a devout Christian, a saintly man. You would never meet a man that lived closer to God -- he truly walked with the Masters.... He was a farmer and a rural mail carrier. The modest farm was located between Cussetta and LaFayette, Alabama. After he sold it, it was known as "the Culpepper Place" for years. Charles Capers Culpepper died at his home in Cusseta, Chambers Co., AL in 1927. He was 66 years old.6 |
