| Biography* | Daniel Elias Leslie Culpepper was the son of John Malcolm and Sarah Ann Elizabeth (Stephens) Culpepper. He was born after the Civil War and raised in Randolph Co., AL. Sometime after the 1880 census, Dan's parents went by wagon train to Grant Co., AR and Dan is presumed to have gone with them. Mrs. D. W. (Lavyn Wright) Sisco, a family historian for the John Malcolm Culpepper family, wrote 8 that "about 1885-1887," Dan and his older brother, Frank Culpepper, went to Hopkins Co., TX to look for land. Frank returned to Arkansas, but Dan apparently stayed and, in 1889, he married Dora (Hardison) Stephens, his cousin's widow, and they settled down in Pine Forest, Hopkins Co., TX to raise their family. Mrs. D. W. (Lavyn Wright) Sisco wrote:9 Uncle Dan Culpepper was a very tall man. He farmed some but was also in law enforcement.... Dan was 43 years old when Dora died in 1911. In 1914, Dan married another widow, Omega Lela (Johnson) Page. Dan was 52 years old when his second wife died in 1920. Dan was married a third time in 1923 to Sarah Maud Hopper. They settled down east of Como, Hopkins Co., TX. Over a period of about 14 years before his death, Dan served as a justice of the peace or as a constable.10 In the Fall of 1935, he was appointed constable of the County Commissioners Court and, in late January, 1936, he was serving as door bailiff for the grand jury of the District Court in Sulphur Springs.10 According to the Friday, 31 Jan 1936 Hopkins County Echo 10 on "Thursday night,"after finishing up with a grand jury session, Dan was headed home when his car ran into a truck and Dan was killed. There were other accidents in the area that night which were attributed to the sleet and ice covered highways and windshields and these factors were believed to have contributed to Dan's accident. Dan was 68 years old. |
