Biography* Robert Earl was the first child of William Jehu and Josephine East to be born in Hopkins County, Texas after their move from Arkansas. He married Ruth Johnson in 1914. Her sister, Lois Johnson married Earl's brother Carl Culpepper. By early 1940's he was employed by the post office in Richmond Texas. His almost yearly vacation was to return to Hopkins County and visit all his siblings and relatives. He had an impressive base voice and his only son, Fred, had a beautiful tenor voice. Sometime during the vacation they always joined with Earl's sister, Tessie Reeves and her family to sing gospel songs around the piano. The trips also included a visit to a local fishing hole with Earl's brother Will Culpepper

Earl loved to sing and sang for many years in the St John's Methodist Church Choir.7 Two of his favorite songs were "Just a Closer Walk" and "In the Garden."7 He also loved to fish and play dominoes.7 A granddaughter, Mrs. R. D. (Ranelle Schultz) Krejci, wrote:8

He especially liked playing with his brother Will and once with his brother George. His son-in-law, Emmit, played most with him and kept a running joke about whose "down" it was.

Ranelle added:8

[Earl] went to Disneyland in 1957 with the Emmit Schultz family and really enjoyed it! Loved looking up "almost lost" relatives and old friends. Delayed the trip to Disneyland by looking them up in almost every town they went through.

His favorite sayings were: "You'll never know where you're going until you know where you've been" and "If you can't say something nice about someone don't say anything."7

Earl died in 1964 at the age of 69.
