| Biography* | W. Jay Culpepper was the son of Capos Conley and Lou Anna Augusta (Atchley) Culpepper. He was born and raised in Arkansas where he was noted with his parents in 1920 census records. In 1938, he married Irene Blackwell and, based on the birth locations of their children, they spent the early years of their marriage in Louisiana before returning to Arkansas. Jay served in the U.S. Navy.2 He later worked at the Pine Bluff Arsenal from which he retired.2 He also was an artist and a commercial sign writer.2 Jay was active in his church and community. He was a charter member of Center Grove United Methodist Church.2 And he was a member of Sheridan Masonic Lodge No. 260, Eastern Star Sheridan Chapter No. 212, Knights Templar, and Sahara Temple of Pine Bluff, AR.2 W. Jay Culpepper died in 1997 a day after his 81st birthday. |
