(David enlisted on 15 May 1862 as a private in the newly formed Battery (Company) D. This company was recruited from Sumter County, Georgia, and was commanded by Captain James Appleton Bleackshear. On October 4, 1862, Company D was disbanded by Special Order #209, Headquarters, Army of Northern Virginia. The officers were assigned to conscript duty and the men were distributed between the remaining batteries. Private Culpeper was assigned to the new Battery C. Battery C was assigned duty with the portion of the Army of Northen Virginia that was sent to Suffolk, Virginia in March 1863. His service record shows that he was killed in the battle at Suffolk on 15 April 1863.).
