He had lived in Canyon for the past four years, and had operated the Coney Island Shop (candy store) near the West Texas State College campus on 4th Avenue. He was born Sept 6, 1897, in [Gibsonville, near] Ashland Ala. He had lived with his family in Hereford before coming to Canyon. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. From Kyra Ludwigson: I was only 7 when he [Lunus] died. The memories I have of him (my mom use to put my older sister, Lynn, and me on a greyhound bus in Albuquerque, and we would go to visit my grandparents in the summer in Canyon) They also lived in Pampa, Hereford, and Amarillo. I remember my grandfather had a very bad limp, which my mom said he got from playing baseball, and somebody slid into him and injured his hip. I remember watching him play in a baseball game. He took BC, a powder form of aspirin to ease the constant pain. He owned a Coney Island stand, where he would make chili dogs, home made fudge, divinity, coconut squares, peanut patties and peanut brittle, which he stirred up in big copper kettles in the back of the store. He sold Nehi soda out of a red Coke ice box. I remember that he loved to fish, and took us fishing on a number of occasions. |
