Hines County Records: A John Culpepper was in the 1831 and 1833 Personal Tax Rolls for Hinds County, MS, but it is not known which John this was. Regarding John Culpepper of Hancock & Marion: A John Culpepper was in the Tax Digest records in Hancock County, MS, for the years 1819, 1820, 1824, and 1827. No Culpeppers were in this digest during 1829-1835, perhaps because the area had become Marion County. From Marion County, MS, deed records: David Summers, Tax collector, having assessed cert. in tracts claimed in the name of JOHN CULPEPPER, one, and the other in the name of Thomas Anderson held by right of donation as the property of the estate of Solomon and Joseph Ford, assignees of JOHN CULPEPPER and Thoma Anderson -- said tracts containing one 500 acres and the other 671 acres -- held in joint tenancy for the years 1838 -- 1839 and which assessment on the part of the said estate of Solomon Ford along with claims of Robert Jones and Gabriel Blackburn and other collectors from 1832 to 1837 amounts to $47.04 on the part of Solomon Ford's Estate (Adm. having paid taes on Joseph Ford's Estate) -- Have seized the Solomon Ford Estate and offer for sale for taes and cost -- land in SW quarter of sec. 29, and S half of Sec. 30, T 1, R 17 W, 507.14 acres bounded N. by Hennegar's claim, E by pine woods, S. by Davenport, and W by Pearl River. Struck off to Ebenezer Ford (Adm. of Joseph Ford Estate) as the purchaser having bid $48 which was the highest and last bid. Dated June 17, 1840. (Abstracts of Deeds, Marion Co. MS, by E. Russ Williams, Jr., p. 87-88, from p. 197-198 in original book) The above land was originally in Hancock County. Regarding John Culpepper of Hancock & Lawrence: This John married Mary Ferrell in 1835 in Simpson County, which is near both Hinds and Lawrence Counties. A John Culpepper was in Lawrence County records in 1834, 1838, 1840, 1841, and 1850, according to researcher Billie New. Presumably, these were tax records. According to his widow's War of 1812 Pension record, John served as a private in Captain Kemper's Company of Mississippi Militia in the War of 1812. He enlisted 7 October 1813 at Ford in Hancock County, MS, and was discharged there 23 November 1813. John lived in Lawrence County, MS from his discharge in 1813 until his death in 1860. The record also states that he was born around 1791, was a farmer, 6 ft. tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and light colored hair.4 |
