| Biography* | John Henry (Culpepper) Taylor wrote on 19 Jun 2007: My uncle Fred Culpepper was never married. Prior to world war II, he enlisted in the U.S.Navy. He served for a period of time and upon the death of his brother Henry, was allowed to leave the service to return home. My mothers recollection is this was due to a law or regulation that permitted an only son to stay with his family. My mother says that at the onset of World War II Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army and was trained as a medical corpsman. She said he was at the invasion of Europe and spent some time under very harsh battlefield conditions. He apparently suffered a nervous breakdown due to the things he had to deal with and was returned to England and then to the U.S. He spent time in a military hospital in Oregon and was then discharged with a disability pension... He spent all his remaining years traveling around the country working were he could and occasionally coming to visit our family for a brief time and then moving on again.6 |
