| Biography* | Jul 2005 | In July 2005, David Allen Culpepper wrote: Joseph S. Culpepper was the father of Southern Barbecue and was directly responsible for teaching the relatives of "Fat Boys Barbecue / Sonneys Barbecue" He owned Joe's Barbecu in the 1930s to 1950s, Barbecue Barn in the mid 1950s, and then Plantation Barbecue until his death, at which time there were 10 restaurants. His homemade Georgia barbecue sauce was very famous. It was passed on to me that the Culpepper family sometime back in the 16 or 1700s were traveling back and forth to Barbados in the Caribbean. It was told to me that that was the place where "Barbados Quay" fire roasted chicken, pig and goat were bought on the beach or quay (boat pier or wharf). This is my understanding of the origination of the word Barbecue was born and brought to this country by one of our ancestors. It is interesting to note that there are still several Culpepper Families on Barbados and even a place called Culpepper Island.5 |
