.
I can not speak for other branches of black Culpeppers, but in my family, the hierarchy was strictly Matriarchal. My Great- Aunt, Zeola " Mama Jones" Culpepper Jones ran our entire family. Until she died, she sat at the head of the table at family gatherings. When there was a family decision to be made, Mama Jones had the final say so.
.
When I was a little girl, Mama Jones would loan me out to the old
ladies in the neighborhood (when they would be left at home alone overnight), and I stayed with my Aunt Edna several times. She taught me how to make rag hooked rugs, and tried to teach me the piano. I now wish I had written down all the stories I heard as a child. Some of the women I stayed with had actually been slaves and I listened to the stories like they were from a story book, instead of realizing how important the stories of their lives were.
