William Dela Shumate1
Male, #38281, (circa 1881 - )
| Birth* | circa 1881 | William was born at Georgia circa 1881. William Dela Shumate was the son of Berryman Dela Shumate. Berryman was born 4 Apr 1849 in Cedartown, Polk Co., Georgia, died 11 May 1935 in Montezuma, Macon Co., GA, and was buried in the old Felton Cemetery, Montezuma, Georgia. He married (1) Mattie Burnam and had one daughter, and (2) Michael Horne on 7 Mar 1875 with whom he had 7 children. Berryman lived in Birmingham, AL and was one of the pioneer builders of the Ensley District of Birmingham, AL. Berryman was the son of Mason Pyron Shumate and Nancy Mangum. According to oral family history, a few years after the Civil War, Pyron Shumate died. The oldest son John Will Shumate, went away to Civil War and his mother took his siblings and left the Atlanta area for a safer place to live. She went to Montezuma, but when John came back from the service he didn't like the gnats/climate and moved to the Thomaston, Upson Co., GA area where he became the "father" of the Thomastonline. I assume that Pyron is probably buried somewhere in the Dekalb Co., GA or Polk Co., GA area. He was born in Dekalb Co., GA but his son Berryman D. Shumate was born in Cedartown, Polk Co., GA. Nancy is buried in the old Felton Cemetery in Montezuma, GA. Mason Pyron Shumate was the son of Berryman Dela Shumate and Thurza Farrar, both of whom died in Dekalb Co., GA. This elder Berryman Dela Shumate was the son of Mason Shumate and Nancy Gatewood, both of whom are buried in Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, Dekalb Co, GA. They were a pioneer family arriving in Dekalb Co., GA in 1824.2,3 |
