| Biography* | In 1790, and in 1812 (see below), Willis Culpepper sold lots in Portsmouth which had originally been purchased by Henry Culpepper (wife Christian Warren) years earlier, which suggests that he was most likely a son of this Henry and Christian. There is no record of Henry's sale of the lots to anyone. It is possible that he sold them to Daniel Culpepper, son of Robert Jr., who owned an adjacent lot in Portsmouth, and that the deed was never recorded. In that case, Willis could have acquired the lots from Daniel, and could be the nephew of Daniel Culpepper. In that case he could be the Willis Culpepper mentioned as "grandson" in the will of Frances Llewellyn, 1775, Martin Co, NC (Martin Co. NC Will Book 1, p. 18). Willis is not mentioned in the will of either Henry or Henry's cousin Daniel. 8 Mar 1754 -- Deed Bk 17, p 70. Wit: John Godfrey, Tubman Laws, Thomas Crafts. 11 Mar 1812 -- Deed Bk 45, p 252. Willis Culpepper and wife Elizabeth of the town of Portsmouth to son-in-law Edward Grant, for good will, land in Portsmouth adj. Tamer Hodges on Glasgow Street, #67 in Elizabeth Square. Wit: John Kemp, Susan Bowers, and Fanny Culpepper. 1 May 1827 -- Deed Bk 53, p 260. John Richardson to Joseph Culpepper for $640, land in Portsmouth on Middle Street, which belonged to Willis Culpepper, deceased. This is per an order to sell land from the County Court sitting in Chancery, a suit of Edward N. Grant and wife Abby as plaintiffs and John Talbot and wife Fanny as defendants. | |
