October 1876, the son of George Washington and Martha (MIDGETT) TWIFORD of East Lake, N.C. Married Lillie, daughter of William Henry and Mary Frances (DANIELS) (LASSITER, of Sunbury, N.C. Children: George William, died infancy; Lillian (Mrs. Daniel E. WILLIAMS); Samuel A., married Dora Gilbert WELLS; Dorothy (Mrs. Wilfred HOPKINS); Margaret (Mrs. Luther B. CULPEPPER, Jr.).

He attended Massey Business College, Richmond, Va; was a commercial fisherman; owned and operated general store at Mann's Harbor, N.C; came to Elizabeth City in early 20's and worked as a clerk for R. E. Quinn Furniture Co., later buying first 1/4 interest, then 1/2 interest and in 1929 becoming sole owner of that business. In 1933, with his son, he opened Twiford Funeral Home. He was an active member of the First Methodist Church, serving as steward, treasurer and trustee; member of Masonic Lodge; I.O.O.F; Jr. Order U.A.M.

He died 3 February 1967 and is buried in New Hollywood Cemetery.
