| Will | 26 Sep 1782 | In Richard Benbow's will on 26 Sep 1782 at Saint Mark's Parish, Craven Co., South Carolina, Sarah, Susanna, Adam, Sarah, Mary and Elizabeth was named as an heir. (In the name of God Amen. I, Richard Benbow of Saint Marks Parish Craven County in the State of South Carolina, Planter, being of perfect mind and memory (Blessed be God) do make this my Last Will & Testament in manner and form following. Imprimis. It is my will that all my just debts and funeral charges all be paid by my Executors hereafter named within some short time after my decease. Item. I give and bequeath unto my loving wife, Sarah Benbow, her living on my plantation or with my children during her widowhood. Item. I give and bequeath unto my loving son Adam Benbow my plantation or tract of land in Saint Mark's Parish, Craven County, in the neighborhood wherein I now live, containing two hundred acres adjoining lands of John Cassels and John Daniels, to him, his heirs and assigns forever. Item. I give and bequeath all and singularly my goods, chattle, negroes and my tract of land whereon I now live containing two hundred acres (after my loving daughter Sarah shall attain the age of eighteen years and after my three youngest children shall be sufficient educated and payment made) unto my loving daughter Susanna Huggins and Mary Benbow, Elizabeth Benbow and Sarah Benbow and loving son Adam Benbow to their heirs and assigns forever to be equally divided amongst by my Executors and Executrix herein after named and if either of my children should chance to die, it shall equally divided--- among the surviving children, and it is my Will, that my Estate both real & and personal shall remain together where it now is and in no wise be removed nor divided until my said loving daughter Sarah shall attain the age of eighteen years. Nevertheless, if my Executors and Executrix herein after named together with my friends Mr. Thomas Newman and my loving brother Powel Benbow whom I nominate as Trustees to my loving children in case any dispute should arise, shall judge it expedient, they may sell my tract of land whereon I now live for negroes and suffer a small part of my Estate to be removed a little distance. And lastly I, nominate and my appoint my loving daughter Mary Benbow Executrix of this my Last Will & Testament revoking, disallowing and disannulling all former Wills and Bequests by me heretofore made or granted, & whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this twenty-sixth day of September in the year of Lord one thousand seven hundred & eighty-two. She is believed to be the daughter of Richard Benbow, who listed a minor daughter Sarah in his will dated 1784. Sarah would name one of her sons Richard and one of Sarah's great-granddaughters would bear the name Benbow as her middle name. |
