Allison Culpepper of Georgia1

Male, #4580, (circa 1784 - between Oct 1854 and 1857)

DNA* He heads a family branch whose exact ancestry is unknown.
Allison Culpepper was once thought to be a grandson of Joseph Culpepper Sr. (died 1745) of Edgecombe County, NC, and was perhaps a son of John and Agnes Culpepper, or of John's brother, Joseph. However, DNA testing has shown that their is no paternal connection between Allison and Joseph or to any other line of Culpeppers who have been tested
The best clues we have to Allison's ancestry are in two 1827 deeds in Jackson Co, GA. In Feb 1827, Allison Culpepper sold his 240 acres in Jackson Co, GA, two separate tracts on Candler's Creek, to Ambrose Yarbrough. Witnesses were Joel Culpepper and Dennis Duncan. The tracts had been granted originally to David Allen (40 acres) and E. Marbury (200 acres). The chain of title from these men to Allison Culpepper has not been found (Jackson Co. Deed Bk. L, both on p. 32). The Joel Culpepper who witnessed Allison's deed was the son of Joseph Culpepper III. Ambrose Yarbrough, who bought Allison's land, was a Baptist minister from Anson Co, NC. He was married to Elizabeth Culpepper, apparent daughter of John Culpepper. But Ambrose was closely associated with the family of Joseph Culpepper III, as well. He was a witness to the 1816 will of Joseph Culpepper III in Jackson Co. GA. Ambrose's daughter Frances married James Culpepper, son of the above Joel Culpepper, son of Joseph III. And it is significant that this 1827 record of Allison was in Jackson Co, where Joseph Culpepper III lived. Malachi Culpepper, the other known son of Joseph, Jr., was also connected to Jackson County. He received Revolutionary War Grants there between 1784 and 1793. (Miscellaneous Records of Jackson Co, GA, by Joseph T. Maddox, and Early Jackson Co Court Records).
Given all of these connections, it is quite possible that there is a maternal Culpepper connection. Or Allison may have been adopted. Future DNA testing may reveal a close connection to another surname, but currently, the likely surname of Allison's father has not been identified.2,3

Biography* Allison was born in the 1780's in GA, according to census records, and probably in the early to mid-1780's, since his eldest child was born around 1804. The 1850 census lists his age as 61, which would place his birth around 1788-1789, but that appears to be in error.

In Nov 1822, Allison bought six head of sheep, for $14, from the estate of John Carmichael, deceased. (Jackson Co GA Inferior Court Minutes, 1809-1822).

In Feb 1827, Allison Culpepper sold his 240 acres in Jackson Co, GA, to Ambrose Yarbrough. Witnesses were Joel Culpepper and Dennis Duncan (see below).

That same year, Allison moved to Houston Co, GA, where he appears in a list of church members in June 1827 (History of Peach Co, GA, p. 150). Allison was a Primitive Baptist minister. During 1836-40 he was pastor of Sand Bed Church in Houston County, later known as Lake Baptist Church ("A Land So Dedicated," by B. Smith Hickson). This church was part of the Echeconnee Association of Primitive Baptist Churches. The original charter names as deacons Sampson Culpepper and Allen Sutton; clerk, James Holmes; and other members Joseph and Peltha Culpepper, Jardy Hargrove, Agnes Green, May Joyner, Frances Sutton, Temperance Baskins, William J. and Ann Collins, and Mary Haddock.

Allison was also a member at one time of what is now called the Poplar Springs North Baptist Church, of Dublin, GA. The church was founded by Allison's relative, the Rev. Charles Culpepper. Other early members of this church included Mary, Allison's wife, Sampson Culpepper, Sr., Josiah and Nancy Warren (parents of Rachel Culpepper, Charles Culpepper's wife), Sarah Frances Culpepper Gilbert and her in-laws, John and Elizabeth Gilbert; Peletithe Gilbert Culpepper, wife of Sampson, Sr., and daughter of John and Elizabeth Gilbert, and others. This information is from a letter written in 1991 by R. M. Johnson, then the historian of this church, to Culpepper researcher Charles A. Wynn, Jr. At that time, a 359 page book was available on the history of this church.

According to a book on Stewart County, in 1837, the Indian Dam Academy was founded. Trustees: Anderson Holt, Robert Hatcher, Ezekiel McMichael, Allison Culpepper, Richard A. Black.2
