Biography* From "Histories of LaGrange and Troup County, GA, Vol. I & III":

Two brothers came to Troup Co. by way of Jasper, Gwinnett, Irwin, and Upson Counties, Ga. There name is often spelled Stirling, but mostly Sterling.

1. Wiley J. Sterling, b. 7-1-1796 S.C. d. 11-7-1851 Troup Co. He married 1-28-1819 Jasper Co., Ga. Betheny Bonner, b. 12-20-1802 Ga. d. 6-27-1881 Troup Co. He was among the promoter- pioneers who pushed the quick settlement and refinement of the Western frontier of Georgia. He promoted the town of Vernon in Troup Co. on the Chattahoochee River, setting up the town, establishing a church and school, obtaining charters, and seeking to have it the county seat of Troup Co. He built a ferry there also, and today the only reminders of the town of Vernon are things like Vernon Road (originally Vernon Ferry Road) which led to Vernon from LaGrange. Wiley J. and Bethena B. Sterling had at least 9 children:
