 He was the son of Joseph Thames and Martha Elizabeth Newberry.1 
Marriage*before 1778 He married Sarah Gause before 1778.2 
Will*1779 In Sarah Gause's will in 1779 at Brunswick Co., North Carolina, Joseph was named as an heir.
     Sarah Gause Thames is proved by her Will written in Brunswick Co. NC 1779 in which she names her husband Joseph Thames. This Will is witnessed by Wm. Gause, Needham Gause and wife Hannah Gause..2 
(executor) Will10 Jan 1813 In Rev. William Thames's will, Joseph was named by William to handle his estate on 10 Jan 1813 at Bladen Co., North Carolina.
     Nuncupative (oral) Will. Died 10 Jan 1813 at house of Joseph Cain, Esq. of Bladen Co. Previous to death, William Thames called in Joseph Thames & Joseph Cain, sons William & James, "We the underwritten subscribers the first of kin and sole heirs of William Thames dec'd do hereby relinquish our right of adm on the estate of our father unto our brother David Thames." Jan 20, 1813. Stephen Wiggins, James Newberry, William Thames, Jonathan Coore, Correch Thames. Wit: Chas McAllester, Jas. Thames.

When the Reverend William Thames died, he had an abundance of "Worldly Goods". The administrators of his estate David Thames (son), Joseph Thames (his brother) and Charles McAllester (Joseph's son-in-law) were required to post a bond of 1000 pounds, current money to the Cumberland Co. NC Court. This Administrators Bond was executed on 1 March 1813.

(heir) Will11 Feb 1814 In Martha Elizabeth Newberry's will on 11 Feb 1814 at Cumberland Co., North Carolina, Joseph was named as an heir.
     Will Book A page 218, 14 February 1814/June 1815. In her will, Martha divided her lands equally between her four surviving sons, viz: Joseph Thames, Thomas Thames, John Thames, and Samuel Thames. Joseph and John were named executors, and the witnesses were Charles and Elizabeth McAllister (daughter of Joseph Thames and the Granddaughter of Martha Thames). Martha made her mark.

Will*28 Feb 1818 He made a will at Cumberland Co., North Carolina, on 28 Feb 1818.
     Will made February 28, 1818, Probated September 1819 Cumberland Co. NC. Names Hannah Thames, wife, as widow of Needham Gause (son Bryant Gause). He states in Will "If either Elizabeth McAlester or John Thames Gilmore (grandson) dies without issue then to brother William Thames' children: David Thames, Cornelius Thames, William Thames, James Thames, Ann Wiggins, Martha Cooper & Lucy Newberry". Elizabeth McAlester is his daughter; Stephen Gilmore was the husband of daughter Mary (Molly) Thames Gilmore, deceased..2 
Death*1 Aug 1819 He died at Cumberland Co., North Carolina, on 1 Aug 1819.4 
Burial*after 1 Aug 1819 His body was interred after 1 Aug 1819 at Thames-McAllister Cemetery on Dunn's Creek, near, Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., North Carolina. Joseph Thames is buried in the Thames - McAllister Cemetery along with his daughters and wife Sarah. Tombstone proves date of birth & death..2
