The 1840 census shows H. A. Culpepper to own 208 slaves in Georgetown Distirct. This considerable wealth was apparently acquired through his marriage to Sarah C. McLean, who had inherited from her mother.

On 19 Jan 1842, Henry A. Culpepper & Sarah C. his wife and James McLean (her brother) recovered against Ed B. Wheeler the lands and damages so found and $46.14 for costs and charges. (Marion CCP, pp 122 & 124)
