"I have been looking into the Ensell surname of Madras. My research is far from complete, but I can tell you that the Sarah Elizabeth Ensell whom you name as wife of Israel Charles Culpeper is found in Madras Presidency baptismal returns. She was daughter of Henry Ensell, Sergeant of the European Light Infantry. My GG grandfather Charles Sidney Ensell, born 1854, was another child of Henry's. I would be very keen to learn if you have any more information on the Ensells.

"It seems the Ensell family was quite large and I am still piecing the details together. Here is a brief genealogy:

Ensell Genealogy
"The Ensell genealogy may be able to trace itself to roots in Ombersley, Worcester, UK. Beyond this it is uncertain, however one family story suggests a German origin and asserts a spelling change to the name. These details are unproven.
"Mr Fred Ensell of Staffordshire, England contacted me in October 2000, and gave me the basic outline of the Ensell family. His information complemented that which I already held. This created a comprehensive tree, which already had significant contributions from Colleen Gray of Poole, UK and Jan Esseth of Norway, both cousins of my mother.
"Mr Ensell belongs to a much larger, earlier Ensell family that has proven its American and German ancestry and for the time being remains unrelated to our family. He wrote to me:
"I'm sorry that I am unable to fit Henry Ensell into the main family. We do not have any Henrys who are unaccounted for or any that would match this one. There were other Ensell families in the area of Ombersley, Worcester, but usually spelt ENSOLL and were of farming background. I found this group in a blanket search for Ensells when at St. Catherine's, London over 20 years ago and I correspond (very infrequently) with a descendant, Maurice Ensell of London. I last heard from him exactly a year ago. I am writing to him to him to tell him of the new descendents in his family and I will give him your address. However, if he is abroad, as he seems to be most of the time, it may be several months before you hear from him.
"In addition to the aforementioned contributions I have found supplementary information from the Mormon International Genealogical Indexes and also from old family letters.
"Following is a composite family tree.

"Henry Ensell - Private 1846 Sergeant 1854. 2nd Regiment European Light Infantry. Regimental No.664. This was the 105 Regiment raised in India in 1839 and became the 2nd Battalion, The Yorkshire Light Infantry.      "Sailed from Chatham, UK on 11 May 1840 aboard the “Essex” as enlisted infantry, bound for Madras. (per Essex passenger list, 138 men, 7 women, 1 child).
"Became Sergeant 2nd Company Light Infantry, Secunderabad. Pensioned in Madras 1870.
