Biography* Susan Van Ord wrote on 23 Aug 2007:
"I'm a descendent of Casandra Culpepper Hager, b. Abt 1824 in Franklin Co., GA (I think). Her husband, Thomas Hager went to fight in the Mexican War (1846-47). He was also, by chance, one of the '49ers who walked to California, found nothing and walked back to GA. Anyway, he didn't ever come back from the war. She said he hadn't been kill in the war -- he just didn't want to come back. So she went back to using her maiden name! Have you any record on this lady? She had a son named Andrew Culpepper Hager, b. 1853 in GA, d. 19 May 1890 -- probably in Augusta, Richmond, GA. His son, my grandfather, was William Garland Hager, Sr. Grampa's brother, James Hager, killed a man and Grampa and all his siblings changed their last name to Culpepper until Grampa was able to get Uncle Jim out of the country. Then Grampa went back to "Hager" as did most of the rest of his siblings. The girls used Culpepper until they married.12
