Research note16 Sep 2006 From Charlene Johnson:
I am seeking information on the Culpepper family of Andrew Jackson Culpepper, apparently the illegitimate child of a Ms. Culpepper of Georgia. His name was legally changed to Andrew Jackson Deen by Act dated 14 Dec 1819 with his father listed as “Ransom E. Deen” of Laurens County, Georgia. The correct name of his father was Ransom Lafayette (R. L.) Deens, although Ransom was probably born “Dean”.

Andrew Jackson Deens

Born: 22 Feb 1816 in Georgia as Andrew Jackson Culpepper

Died: 30 Aug 1891 in Florida Town, Santa Rosa, Florida

Buried at Bagdad Cemetery in Bagdad, Santa Rosa, Florida

Married Louisa Coleman on 27 Apr 1837 possibly in Alabama

Born: 27 Jul 1815 in Georgia

Died: 20 Jul 1899 in Florida Town, Santa Rosa, Florida

Buried at Bagdad Cemetery in Bagdad, Santa Rosa, Florida

Andrew Jackson Culpepper/Deen-Deens may have been raised by his Culpepper mother or by her family, probably in Georgia. He was called Jack or Jackson. At some point in time, he became part of the family of his father Ransom and his younger siblings. It is only very recently that I discovered he was born out of wedlock to a Ms. Culpepper and that the children of Ransom and his wife Sarah were his half-brothers and half-sisters. Jackson and his wife Louisa lived in Conecuh County, Alabama from 1837 until about 1844-1849 when they moved to Santa Rosa County, Florida where they resided until their deaths. They did live for a brief period in Santa Rosa County in 1838. They were the parents of 8 children, born in Alabama and Florida.

Andrew Jackson Deens served as a Private in the Mexican War, Company A, Florida Volunteers, known as Captain Kelly's Company, April 1847-March 1848.

Although Jackson and his father Ransom seemed to prefer and use the spelling Deens, the name also appears as Deen, Deans and Dean.

Jackson’s father Ransom moved from Georgia to what became Conecuh County, Alabama about 1817-1818 and resided there until his death in 1848. Ransom married Sarah Ann Hawthorne and raised a family there. He went back to Georgia on a few occasions for business/property reasons and at the death of his father Richard Dean who died around July 1840 in Columbus, Muskogee, Georgia. Ransom may have resided or owned property in other counties in Georgia.

Here are the names of the children of Andrew Jackson Culpepper/Deens and his wife Louisa Coleman:
Ransom Lafayette Deens/Deen: Born 30 Jan 1838 in Florida. Married Elizabeth Burgoon. Lived in Texas.
Mary Arabella Deens: Born 30 Nov 1839 in Alabama. Died as a young girl.
Sarah Ann (Sallie) Deens: Born 3 Feb 1842 in Alabama. Married Joseph P. Russell. Lived in Alabama.
Joseph Richard Deens/Dean: Born 17 Mar 1844 in Alabama. Married Clarissa L. ? Lived in Florida.
Frances Louise (Fanny) Deens: Born 1 Jun 1849 in Florida. Lived in Florida.
Andrew Jackson (Jack) Deens/Deen/Dean: Born 8 Apr 1853 in Florida. Married Melinda Elifare Anderson, Lonnie ?, Bessie? and Eugenia Raley. Lived in Florida.
Charles E. Deens/Deen: Born 25 Aug 1855 in Florida, Married Mary Louisa ? Lived in Florida.
Nancy Arabella (Belle) Deens: Born 10 Dec 1857 in Florida. Married Edmund Gaillard Creighton. Lived in Florida (my great-grandparents).1
Research note*16 Sep 2006 See Mary Culpepper [ID: 3230] daughter of Sampson Culpepper, as a possible mother for Andrew Jackson Culpepper / Andrew Jackson Deens. Another possibility might be her aunt, Polly Culpepper [ID:3221] sister of Sampson and daughter of John Culpepper.2
Research note13 Nov 2007 From Sharon Lee: "...my ancestor Richard Dean was a neighbor of the Culpeppers in Laurens Co, GA and was in Muscogee Co, GA at the same time."

This might suggest that Andrew Jackson Culpepper's mother was from the Christopher Culpepper branch of the family.3
