| Obituary* | 13 Jul 2008 | Mrs. Bessie Culpepper, 98, was born Oct. 12, 1909, near Attapulgas, Ga., a daughter of the late Edmund Everett and Ella Mae Anderson Wilkerson. Her husband of 59 years, Burney T. Culpepper, was a steamfitter and followed construction work. As a result, they started married life in Phenix City, Ala., then over a period of four years, they moved to Statesboro, Ga., Georgetown, S.C., Tallahassee, Fla., then Pensacola, Fla., in 1940. They moved to the Vernon, Fla., area in 1952. She was a loving wife and mother and was an outstanding seamstress and tailor. During World War II, she worked as a seamstress at Fort Barrancas in Pensacola, Fla., altering and fitting uniforms for both Army and Navy personnel. During her 56 years in the Vernon area, she made dresses and other clothing for the ladies and children and shirts, jackets and alterations for all. She was Baptist by faith and a very devout Christian, having been a dedicated member of First Baptist Church and subsequently Eastside Baptist Church of Vernon, where she taught children at Sunday school classes. She was a lifetime member of Eastern Star. She was predeceased by her husband, Burney; sisters, Ruby Gilland and Mary Bond; brother, Richard E. Wilkerson; and nephews, Jim Wilkerson and Sammy Wilkerson. Her father died when she was a young girl because of an accident in the mill, where he was employed. She is survived by a son, William Culpepper Sr. (Anne); grandson, William Culpepper Jr; great-grandson, William Brandon Culpepper; great-granddaughter, Kristy Post; great-great-granddaughter, Cedella Post; nephew, Charley Cecil Wilkerson; and nieces, Gloria Howell (Bob), Carolyn Wooley (Reese), Merle Russell, Jewel Shierling (Ray), Valerie Wilkerson, Anne Turner and Katherine Ghelerter (Allan). Brown Funeral Home, State 77 Chapel of Chipley, Fla., is providing funeral arrangements. The family will host visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. today, July 14, 2008, at the funeral home. A gathering and luncheon for friends and family will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the Eastside Baptist Church Activities Building with burial following. The Rev. Mike Browning, the Rev. Ray Cotton and the Rev. Johnny Jones will be officiating. Pallbearers asked to serve are Stanton Armistead, Eugene Armistead, Micheal Brock, T.J. Dade, Frank Phillips and Clyde Winstead. Honorary pallbearers are the men of Eastside Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Covenant Hospice, 4440 Lafayette St., Suite C, Marianna, FL; or Eastside Baptist Church, to Pam Cates, 2681 Traverse Drive, Vernon, FL.1 |
