Biography* Jun 1751, Norfolk Tithables, Col. Crafords to Batchelders Mill, Thomas Culpepper, John Culpepper, Solomon Suggs, 3 tithes. John's first appearance in the tithe records, he should be about 16 years old. Jun 1753 -- Norfolk Tithables, West Side of the Southern Branch from Batchaldors Mill, Thomas Culpeper, John Culpeper & Wilobey, 3 tithes. Sep 1758 -- John Culpepper was listed as a member of the Virginia Colonial Militia. 19 Feb 1761 -- Deed Bk 19, p 177. John Culpepper apprentices himself to Isaac Luke, Joiner (carpenter), for three years, three months, "to learn his art, trade and mastry he now followeth.". Signed: John Culpepper, Isaac Luke. John was not to contract matrimony during the time of his apprenticeship. And Isaac Luke, who lived on lot 75 in Portsmouth (DB 17, p. 177), was to provide him with board and lodging and clothing. 10 Jun 1761 -- Norfolk Tithables, Southern Branch Precinct, "Isaac Luke & John Culpaper & negro Charity" (same household), 3 tithes. Thomas Culpepper, John's father, was in this same precinct. 20 Jul 1786 -- Thomas Culpepper's will left John "100 acres of land out of David Deal's patent now in his possession also 50 acres out of the patent that Rudery & I (Thomas) surveyed Beginning at the line of Robert Culpepper & running out till he fulfills his 50 acres of land in the said survey." 17 Dec 1810 -- John leaves the 50 acres he inherited from his father Thomas ("swamp land lying in the survey of Thomas Culpepper and Daniel Rudery") to his son John, Jr. The audit record for John's estate lists each of his nine children, who were each due $11.46 from his estate (10 June 1811).
