| Biography* | | On 29 Aug 2005, Patti Anne Culpepper Gaines wrote: "There is a Veterans Stone at the foot of daddy's grave, but I assure you he never went to Viet Nam - I think his wife had it put there, she wasn't married to him while he was in the army and maybe she just assumed he did a tour there and requested the stone. I know he did short terms in both the Navy and the Air Force before going into the army. His mother died when he was around 3 and his father died when he was around 12 and he had nowhere to go. He stayed where ever anyone would let him until he was 16 and lied about his age to get into the service. After the Navy and Air Force, but before the Army, he was the first motorcycle cop in Phenix City, AL! I never really believed that until June of this year when I read it in the local newspaper in the 'fifty years ago today' column. It said he operated a big Harley Davidson machine. Wish I knew where that bike is today."5 |
