DNA* From DNA and genealogical evidence we conclude that John Culpepper Jr. is a descendant of Thomas Culpepper, who is a son of Henry Culpepper, Jr. and grandson Henry Culpepper of Lower Norfolk, VA.

(In the name of God Amen I Cherry Culpepper of Deep Creek Norfolk County being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory for which I thank God & calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and being anxious to dispose of all property that I hold Viz.

First I give and bequeath unto my Nephew James Spratt and his heirs one negro boy named Jacob forever.

Second I give unto my sister Catherine Culpepper one bed and bed stead & furniture, one trunk & twenty dollars in cash.

Third I give & bequeath unto James Spratt Jr. & Paul Cherry all my right & title in a plantation lying on Julius Creek & what money that Mr. Henry Deal is due me to be equally divided between them forever.

Fourthly I give and bequeath unto my sister Faithey Messley one wollen [?] counterpiece one loom and implements for ever,

Fifth I give unto my sister Mary Cherry one large chest forever.

Sixth I forgive the debt that Joseph West [?] is due me and Sister Catherine as I have made her amends for what he was due her &

Seventh it is my will that my brother John Culpepper have a right made him for my rights in the plantation that he now lives on by my heirs, I have rec'd pay for the same from him and neglected to make my ought [?]

Eighth and last it is my will that Henry Spratt shall pay all my funeral expenses & Doctors charges.

In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affix'd my seal this 28th of Sept 1829.

In a Court held for Norfolk County the [illegible] of October 1829 -- the foregoing [illegible] was proved by the oath of the said witnesses and ordered to be recorded. Teste. Wm. Wilson [illegible title]).6

(In the name of God Amen I John Culpepper being sick and weak in body of sound mind and memory do make this my last Will in manner and form as followeth. viz. First after my death I wish my funeral expences paid out of the money that is owing me as to my debts I owe no person.

Second, I lend unto beloved wife Sarah Culpepper the use of my plantation household and kitchen furniture horses farming utentials together with all my stock of hogs and cattle during her life time.

Third after the death of my wife I give unto my son Abel Culpepper all my plantation containing One hundred and twenty acres that is the plantation where I now reside on to him and his heirs forever also he has liberty to build on or improve the said plantation before the death of my wife not interupting or disturbing her.

Fourth I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Culpepper and his heirs a certain piece or parcel of land beginning at white gum running N. to a white oak thence N. to Cook's Mill Run thence down said run to Cook's line.

Fifth I give unto my son John Culpepper one large inglish musket.

Sixth after the death of my wife I request that all the property that I lend to my wife to [be] equally divided among my children.

Seventh & last I constitute and appoint my wife my Exexatrix in witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this ninth day of November in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and twenty five.

At a Court held for Norfolk County the 20th November 1837 This Will was proved by the oath of Robert Brown a subscribing witness thereto being dead James Spratt being first sworn deposed that he is well acquainted with the hand writing of the said Henry Spratt and that he verily believes the signature to the said Will is in the own proper hand writing of the said Henry Spratt dec'd whereupon the said Will is ordered to be recorded.
