| Biography* | | Cecil was valedictorian of the Lawrence County High School class of 1919. He attended Clark College and Mississippi State College. In 1921 he joined his brother, Hilton, in Mission, TX. He returned to Poplarville for a few years but moved back to Texas (with "Nothing in my pocket but a train ticket") in 1929 to again join Hilton, who had moved to Cameron. The brothers owned a wholesale candy business which served Central Texas. Cecil traveled throughout the area selling candy to and becoming friends with people who would later trust him to purchase their farm land for real estate development. On June 25, 1932, he married Mary Lake Henderson. In 1937 the family moved to College Station, TX. Cecil bought 200 acres directly across from Texas A&M College. This became his first residential real estate development. For the next 35 years he built residential developments, apartments, shopping centers and medical facilities in Bryan/College Station. A few months before his death, he broke ground for the second phase of his largest yet commercial development. In 1945 Cecil helped organize the Bryan/College Station Real Estate Board, serving as its first president. He served three terms as director for the Texas Real Estate Association. In 1949 he was appointed by Governor Alan Shivers as one of six original Real Estate Commissioners for the State of Texas, a licensing law having recently passed to create a need for administrating and directing Real Estate Laws for the state. Cecil served as commissioner for twelve years and as chairman for the commission in 1957-58. |
