Biography* Henry III was probably "the child my wife goes with" mentioned in his father Henry Culpepper, Jr.'s will, in 1699.

In 1708 he was only nine years old, and so was not the Henry Culpeper whose land was mentioned in John Creekmore's will that year. That Henry was his deceased father, Henry, Jr., to whom Creekmore sold land in 1798:

1711 -- Deed Bk 9, p 80. Will of John Creekmore dated 4 Jan 1708/9 and proved 17 Aug 1711 by Emanuel Burgis. Various bequests including: "Unto my son John Creekmur Jr 50 acres of land lying between Richard Hodges and Henry Culpepper called by name of Horse Point...."

Henry III first appears in Norfolk County records in November 1716, at the age of 17, witnessing the will of his grandfather, Thomas Richardson. Although this may seem like a young age for someone to be witnessing a will, there are other proven cases of men this young witnessing deeds and wills.

1719 -- Deed Bk 10, p 48. Will of THOMAS RICHARDSON Senr of ye County of Norfolk, dated 10 Nov 1716 and proved 20 Mar 1718/9 by John Willoughby, Faithful Cherry and Henry Culpepper.

witnesses: Faithfull Cherry.
Nichs Hill, mark.
Jon Willoughby.
Henry Cullpeper. mark.
Thomas Richardson & Seale.

It is important to note not only that Henry III signed with a mark, but also, that his mark was distinct from that of his father, Henry, Jr., and his grandfather, Henry. This mark is a block lettered "HC." The marks with which they signed documents helps distinguish the three early Henrys from each other.

18 Dec 1719 -- Deed Bk 10, p 86. Order is granted Henry Culpepper for the sum of twenty shillings against the estate of Richard and Sarah Wright, etc.

In 1724, Thomas Culpepper sold land to his brother Henry III. Both men were described as coopers, or barrel makers:

24 Feb 1724 -- Deed Bk F, p 132. Thomas Culpepper, cooper, and Ann his wife, to Henry Culpepper, cooper, for £25, 100 acres of the South side of Deep Creek, South Branch of the Elizabeth River. "Only my mother's thirds her lifetime." Wit: Faithful Cherry, Ruth Cherry, Ruth Suggs.
Signed: Thomas Culpepper, Ann Culpepper

Henry III appears adjacent to Robert Culpepper, Jr. in the Western Branch Pct. tithables for 1730-1733 and disappears from records thereafter. No estate or probate record for him as been found. Mary Culpepper, thought to be his widow, shows up in the next available Norfolk Tithable records in 1750, connected to Henry and Jeremiah Culpepper, presumably their sons.
