| Biography | Mar 2000 | From an e-mail from Warren Culpepper to Patricia Lewis, March 2000: It's possible, but I doubt that the Margaret Culpeper that you're looking for is Margaret Culpeper of Oxen Hoath (born 1481). Oxen Hoath was the family manor in West Peckham, Kent (a spot that I recently visited and photographed).... When her father died in 1484, as minors, she and her sisters (Joyce and Elizabeth) inherited quite a few estates, Oxen Hoath included. Upon Margaret's marriage to William Cotton, the Oxen Hoath estate passed to him, and it later was passed to the Cotton descendants. Had she been married to someone else before William, the estate would most likely have passed to that husband and stayed within his family. Had she married someone after William Cotton, she would probably have been identified as Margaret Cotton. The more likely suspect for the Margaret who married John Walbeck would be Margaret Culpeper (born about 1475) of the Wakehurst line of Culpepers.2 |
