| Biography* | | Col. Attree in The Sussex Colepepers, Part II (page 77), says that after Thomas Culpeper's death, Mary married Francis Bacon. With no specificity provided about this person, the presumption would be that she married the famous English statesman and writer, Sir Francis Bacon, Viscount Saint Alban, Baron of Verulam. However, Sir Francis was born in 1561 and Mary in 1517. The 44 year age difference makes a marriage between them most unlikely. Yet, it would have been possible as she did not die until 1587. As she is buried in Frenze, co. Norfolk, where there is a monument to her memory, a check of the monumental inscription may well clarify this mystery. |
