| Biography* | [From an e-mail message to Warren Culpepper from Lew Griffin, 22 Jun 1998]: Fairfax Harrison thought the line probably went back to Edmund (1547-post 1605)... (See Edmund's biography for Harrison's comments.) This William was the one who married Margaret Allen or Alleyne, and was the father of John Alleyne Culpepper of Barbados, the one (who some think) is one and the same as John of Albemarle. The only source I have on this family is "Genealogies of Barbados Families" and that only gives a sketchy account of William's children as part of an extensive article on the Alleyne family. It suggests that William had the following children (no proof offered): Abel, Alleyne, John Alleyne, Francis, and Margaret. So my first question would be, were there really two different sons, one named Alleyne, and the other, John Alleyne ? Can these two men (if there really were two) be distinguished in Barbados records? Does this John Alleyne Culpepper disappear from Barbados records at the same time that "John the Rebel" showed up in Charleston, SC, or in Albemarle? If for instance, he was still merrily engaged in land transactions in Barbados while John the Rebel was known to have been in NC, then that would be worth knowing, and would prove that they were two different men. Also, if there is no evidence in Barbados of TWO brothers, one John Alleyne and the other just Alleyne, that would be worth knowing. Because of the unusual naming pattern, I have my doubts about their being two men, I think it is possible that John Alleyne just went by the "Alleyne" and dropped the John. So I would need to see more evidence than I currently have on this before just assuming that John the Rebel was John Alleyne. If he were John Alleyne, then why didn't he use the Alleyne or initial "A" in any records found so far in NC? Also, which of these sons of William is the ancestor of Culpeppers who still live in the West Indies? (Names referenced above: Rev. William Culpeper of England and Barbados Rev.
