| Biography* | | Ob. intest. William Francis Culpeper appears to have had three wives: Mercy Alleyne Culpeper (his first cousin), Susanna ___ and Catharine (Christian?) Ann "Kitty" Haynes. However, since there were several William Francis Culpepers, it is possible that one of these wives has been assigned the wrong husband. There are two consecutive entries on April 21, 1792 for baptisms at St. Joseph Parish. The first is for "Mary Molony, dau of Willm: Frans: & Susanna Culpeper". The second is for "Mercy, dau of Wm: Frans: & Lucy Alleyne Culpeper". If Lucy Alleyne really existed, that would be a fourth wife. The marriages and descendancy shown within this database is constructed on the following speculative assumptions: (1) That Lucy Alleyne was really Mercy Alleyne (the writer has not yet seen the source documents, but only documents compiled from them). (2) By the time of this baptism, Mercy Alleyne had died, perhaps in child birth when daughter Mercy was born. (3) William Francis then married Susanna (there is no record of this marriage) and the child Mary Maloney was born of that marriage. (3) William Francis and Susanna then had both daughters baptized at the same time. This theory is consistent with the Culpeper of Barbados pedigree and the Richard Culpeper GEDCOM. (This GEDCOM also shows three additional unnamed children of Wm Francis and Mercy Alleyne) An alternative theory is that the apparent third marriage of William Francis Sr to Christian Ann Haynes was really a marriage between her and William Francis Jr, although he was only 16 years old at the time. |
