| Biography* | Ann ran a school in Uplands, Maritzburg, Natal, South Africa. The following is from Jennifer Southorn, Jan 2002: Annie Emily Colepeper was born Annie Emily Rowe in England on 20 October 1851, the daughter of The Reverend Samuel Rowe. She was one of the early women graduates at Cambridge University, gaining a 1st Class Honours degree from Newnham College. She taught in England, France and Germany before going out to South Africa in 1885. She married F.Colepeper, who was Inspector of Schools, presumably in Natal, since his wife was headmistress of The Girls' Collegiate School in Pietermaritzburg from 1885-1893. From 1893-1899 she ran a small school at her father's home in Loop Street, Pietermaritzburg and in 1899 she founded the Uplands High School in Pietermaritzburg. She died in Pietermaritzburg in 1946 and there was a long article in the paper on her contribution to education. She was also President of the Women's and Children's Protection League in Natal. She came of a distiguished family. One of her brothers was a headmaster of Tonbridge School, another a professor at Calcutta University. Her connection with my husband's family is that she was aunt to his grandmother Margaret Ethel Lister (née Rowe), who was the daughter of Annie Emily's brother, The Reverend Samuel Evans Rowe. On 9 Apr 2003, Jennfier Southorn added: "I am wondering if Ann Emily Rowe was at Newnham College Cambridge before degrees were awarded to women. I have a record of her being awarded 1st Class Honours in the Cambridge Higher Locals, suggesting that this might have been an alternative qualification awarded to women in the early days."2 |
