The census record did not make it clear which school the Culpeppers were attending. However, since they were sons of a prosperous family in nearby Wilcox County, most likely they were attending Greene Springs School, which operated from 1847 to 1884 as one of the State's academies. Called "Rugby" of the South, it prepared a number of Alabama leaders and was one of the first schools to add the study of science and government to the usual classics.
