| Biography* | That Osborne Jackson Culpepper was a son of Benjamin is based in part on the recollections of William George Culpepper, grandfather of Culpepper researcher Linda Cushing of Anderson, SC. According to Linda, her grandfather "listed the brothers and sisters of George L. Culpepper from memory, so that's how I got the names of Jackson, Lemuel, and William" (from her 1995 letter to Lew Griffin). Circumstantial evidence suggests that the Jackson Culpepper, son of Benjamin, was actually Osborne J. Culpepper of Louisiana. This Osborne J. Culpepper's son, Pleasant Jackson Culpepper, stated on the 1900 census that his father had been born in Alabama. There were very few Culpeppers in Alabama at an early date, so it seems almost certain that Osborne J. Culpepper and Jackson Culpepper were one and the same. If estate records for Benjamin Culpepper can be located in Clarke Co, AL, then they should confirm this. Further research is needed.
