Bowding Sumpter Helms, White, born 28 Mar 1890 in Eufaula, AL, died 1 Jun 1975 in Panama City, Bay Co., FL. The WW-I draft index (Grady Co., GA) shows this person to be a male who was married with one child, so since Bowding is such a rare name, the Bowding Helms who married Joseph Edward Payne may have been the child. Perhaps the child is the one in the SSDI which shows a Bowding H. Searcy, 12 Feb 1916 - 21 Dec 2002, who died in Lexington Co., SC and whose SSN was issued in TN before 1951.8

Biography* Alma had a stormy marriage with Joe Payne, and reportedly they were divorced three times. Not long after her final divorce in 1946, Alma relocated to St. Petersburg, FL and spent the final years of her life in her home there at 3515 19th Street, North.

In the summer of 1959, she became ill and went to Andalusia, AL to be taken care of by her daughter, Elaine Culpepper. Her illness worsened, and by the time it was diagnosed as cancer, it was too late. She died on 2 Sep 1959 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, AL and was buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Andalusia.
